Keith Tulloch The Doctor Shiraz 2016

“Care for a jelly baby?”. Tom Baker, easily the best Doctor Who, and Sarah Jane Smith perhaps the most annoying ‘assistant’ – “DOCTOR!”. I did like Leela as a young man, well, very much, and also the first Romana (Lalla Ward, who’s married to Richard Dawkins), and probably the second Romana too. Anyway, top-of-the-line Shiraz from Keith Tulloch, which includes 20% whole bunches for the first time this vintage. September 2019 release. 160 dozen produced.

It’s a big boy for sure. Black fruit, floral perfume, tar, exotic spice and cedar oak. Medium to full-bodied, grip of grainy tannin, brooding and savoury, but that perfume comes up too, and all the spice. Acidity is firm, and just sits just proud of the wine, at least as a youngster. Quite long, with sour cherry, raspberry and orange to close. Baroque in style, you might say, and certainly may give the purchaser of ‘luxury’ Hunter Shiraz plenty to grab on to. Regardless, needs time to settle into its groove.
