Cobaw Ridge Chardonnay 2012

The vineyard is now certified biodynamic and the winery is decidedly hands-off, but proactive in vineyard work to ensure low yield, soil health and general vine good vibes. The wine spends time in old and and a small portion of new oak with a natural ferment to make grapes turn to wine. A fascinating producer if you take a wander through their range of wines, pushing some boundaries with aromas and flavours through their minimal intervention winemaking, but in a good way. Open this bottle and smell Jura then realise it’s Macedon; the hills and dales, cool winters and nights, a hint of regional mintiness, even in white wine. Dig it.

A touch cloudy in glass. Lemon and bruised apple aromas. These characters seem to segue to the palate with an almost vanilla-meets-licorice lilt and a hint of mint. It’s washy and juicy in texture with inescapably tangy acidity and fine, flint-like minerality refreshing the palate. Sluices across the palate with little interest in formal structure, but it tightens up to a zesty pucker (though that feels cloaked in gentle creaminess). Touch of oxidation maybe, but in a good way, complexing and giving nuttiness. It’s an addictive drink, performs superbly in its evolution, compelling you to keep going back to the wine; detail and interest in spades. This is great.
