Grampians Estate St Ethyl’s Shiraz 2017

It’s been some time since I’ve tasted a wine from Grampians Estate – indeed not since shortly after it was devastated by bushfire in 2006. This Great Western shiraz is largely from the Garden Gully Vineyard, planted in 1878, and is matured in both French and American oak, old and new.

Look, really, it’s a beauty. It’s pure Great Western shiraz in all its glory. It offers both black and white pepper notes, ample cloves, a sweep of cherry-plum fruit, and then olive, coffee, malt and saltbush characters. So much going on, and yet all within a medium-weight, fluid, seamless package. It finishes with beautiful persistence. It’s quite a find.
