Billy Button The Elusive Nebbiolo 2016

Nebbiolo from the Alpine Valleys in north-east Victoria. I have a feeling this might just have picked up a gold/trophy at the Alternative Varieties wine show. I tasted this at a stand-up tasting of a large range of wines at the winery a week or so ago; notes are a bit more straight-down-the-line than has become customary of late. Smiley face.

Licorice, red berries, plenty of herbs, lots of promise, firm tannin but velvety. Sees extended skin contact: six months before pressing off for this 2016 release; the 2017 was on skins for 10 months. This 2016 looks quite remarkably good, it must be said. Good core of fruit, firm hand of tannin, a wink to the future. It’s a step up from the 2015. We are going places here.
