Woodlands MargaretAfter tasting this wine Woodlands have now become a very large blip on my purchasing rader. So large that may face now has a sickly green glow. Well I think that must be the reason. Anyway, when you can buy wines of this quality (and Voyager Estate) for half the price of Cullen and Moss Wood, well quite frankly, they can shove it up their jumper!

Aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry, earth, tobacco and cedar oak. Touch of mint. A beautiful smelling wine. On the palate flavours of blackcurrant, dark tobacco and dark chocolate supported by just the right amount of cedary oak. Fine grained tannins. Style. Balance. Length. Nothing out of place. I’m going to be all over this wine like a fat kid on a chocolate cake.

Tasted : Jul06
Alcohol : 14.2%
Price : $45
Closure : Screwcap
Drink : 2009 - 2020

Better get in quick, with all the rave reviews it’s just disappeared off the winery order form :-(

My mail is there is still a bit available via distributors to retail channels. Lets hope. I am up for some!

I’ve been trying to get some from my favourite retailer for weeks now, but his distributor hasn’t delivered either the wine or a price. :-(

The next reserve Cabernet (the 04) to be released is stunningly good. However the 05 in barrel is even better, potentially( if it makes it to bottle in the same form) the best Oz wine I have tried in the last two years.

Warning blatant plug: I have 7 bottles remaining in stock of the Margaret 2004 at Liquor Prince, if anyone’s interested you can email me at barry@liquorprince.com.au , thanks Gary, your regular broadcast will now be resumed.

Everyone ignored the mint comment. Aussie wines often show mint that we tend to ignore when in isolation but it can stand out like dogs balls. Another way is to say its part of our Aussie flavour profile and is very nice at LOW levels.

Showing your cabernet bigotry again? You should have a disclaimer with every comment (;-))saying that you were bullied by a cabernet vine in primary school and have never been able to forget it.

Disclaimer: I am a well known Cabernet Bigot! BUT, lets hear it for the mint question?? I said Aussie wines since the first thing kiwis and yanks look 4 in Aussie PN is the “Mint” character. A little is OK, but a lot is not!

Now let me get back to sleep.

I agree with David…eg Giaconda cabernetm by itself, allegedly lovely, but in the presence of fine bdx, minty rubbish…just ask Gary.

Glad you all loved the Woodlands 2004 Margaret Reserve Cabernet Merlot. The 2005 is due into my warehouse this week. And yes it’s a better wine than the 2004, in my opinion.Happy Drinking, but be quick.
    The Distributor.

Yes indeed. The 2005 is stellar. With all the gloom and doom in the wine industry of late it is positive to see that outstanding wines and producers still get noticed.

Any idea of the cellaring potential of the ‘05?

Where can it be purchased in Sydney?

  17. Matt on January 16th, 2007 11:50 am

Try North Sydney Cellars, they will take delivery this week.Cellaring 10-15yrs

Or you could try the Woodlands web site where it sells for $33/bott plus delivery. I ordered a six pack yesterday. It’s great speaking with the staff there who are knowledgable, loads of fun and with plenty of time for a chin wag. Good wine & good folk - a winning combination.

    excellent - ta.

  20. Brent on January 16th, 2007 3:13 pm

Just ordered a 6 pack of the ‘05 Margaret Reserve direct from the winery yesterday as well. I just hope that the Melbourne weather cools down a bit before my wine arrives!

  21. chris on January 19th, 2007 9:57 pm

Having a glass of the ‘05 now. I would say that the kid or the chocolate cake (or both) just got bigger.

  22. Gary Walsh on January 20th, 2007 9:13 am

Ha ha. Ordered 6 ex-winery last week myself.

After a 1.5 hour delayed flight I am having a small glass of the 2005 now. Very nice. Not sure it is better than the 2004 though. Different. More subtle. Maybe better it is if you like your cab a bit more on the leafier side. I’ll review it tomorrow. Actually it is really very very good. Lets see what tomorrow brings…

This stuff is so good I just ordered another 2 doz from cellar door. 05 for me is a better wine than the stellar 04, more stuffing I guess, failing to pick up those underripe leafy tones in this glass.

  25. Gary Walsh on April 17th, 2007 11:16 am

Hmmm. I thought 05 had less stuffing! I had better do a back to back with 04 and 05 to put my mind at ease :) GW

  26. The Deek on April 17th, 2007 11:23 am

Just found the 04 abit more on the subtle side.
