Tyrrells Reserve Stevens Vineyard Shiraz 2005
I don’t know when this is released. Maybe next year or the year after. The fruit for this wine is sourced from one of the great Hunter Valley vineyards – Old Hillside.
Opens up a bit meaty and reduced but there is plenty of cherry and berry fruit, pepper and subtle French vanilla oak. Earthy and fragrant. On the medium bodied palate it has red fruit, plums and earth, and with decanting, the added richness of some licorice and chocolate flavours. There is a touch of spicy cinnamon/vanilla French oak in support. The most significant feature of this young wine is the outstanding palate. It has velvety tannins, a seamless mouthfeel and great length of flavour. I’ll be waiting patiently for this one.

I wish Tyrrell’s weren’t so heavy handed wuith the sulphur at bottling with their reds- they get such great fruit and then more often than not screw it with off sulphur problems post bottling. This occured consistently with their earlier cork sealed bottles and seems to have continued with their screwcap sealed which are not so sulphur friendly.
I agree
Agree as well, although find the sulphur levels inconsistent depending on the bottle. Not a huge fan of Tyrrells Shiraz for this reason although haven’t tried this yet. Gary, note your penchant for Hunter Syrah. Try the Mount Pleasant Rosehill ($25 @ DM). I have the 2001 vintage (which is great and probably needs some time) and 03 was great for the Hunter region generally. I will try that soon.
DB - have had the 2001 rosehill a couple of times very enjoyable fleshy (for Hunter) style of wine sweet fruit, earth and spice.
Interestingly the back lable says drink (something like) 8 years from vintage - whereas Rosehill normally says drink up to 15 years.
** Rosehill 2005 was the Champion Red Wine of the Hunter Valley wine Show a fortnight ago - won about 3 trophies so something else to look forward to.
Cheers,
I liked the 05 Philip better than 05 Rosehill..although Chatto was a strong supporter of it. The wine of the trio (for me) is 05 OH&OP.

Jim was one of the judges at the 07 Hunter Show - but his opinion for the 05 Rosehill spported by the other 12 judges.
Yes. But not Campbell or me.

I consistently enjoy OP & OH most of these three, and will say the same for the Quadrella, if you want to include Maurice.
Terrific wine this. Very sexy.
