I had an interesting discussion with some folks about sweet red wines last night. By sweet, I mean really sweet - not just sweet ripe fruit. There are a few on the market that are doing very well (in sales terms), a certain Yellow Tail Merlot leading the pack. Has anyone come across any other Sweet red Wines? Would love to hear of some examples ...
I tried one from Brookwood red a couple of weeks ago called Mellow Rouge that's very sweet and chimes in at around 10% alc, quite like the Brown Bros mentioned by Anthony.
The distributor who brought it along thought it would appeal to those who found most wines too dry - I guess specifically Rose/Breezer drinkers. She was trying to sell it in Brisbane but had no luck with it at all, and is stuck with boxes of the stuff!
I am a big fan of some sweet red table wines, especially some of the Italian examples. There is a passito version of Umbrian sagrantino I like a great deal as a style. It goes very well with pastries (trad use) but also with rich meat dishes. Sweet, unfortified reds can do an amazing job of matching with chocolate based desserts. Passito style sagrantino needs a minimum of 30g/l of residual sugar, but usually has good acid (DOCG regs require a minimum of 5 ppm) as well as great tannin and colour.
I'm a big fan of both the secco and passito styles of sagrantino. I'm actually part way through an experiment with some Australian sagrantino fruit where we have combined some traditional Umbrian techniques with some amarone style drying and tannin handling processes. The resulting wine should come in at around 7g/L residual sugar. It's in barrel at the moment and will be at least an interesting experiment.
I had a great little number the other night, a dutschke moscato, $10 a pop in a great looking package, a blue reisling bottle, simple wine, easy to drink, 10% alcohol, good for an early starter.
To the guy/gal who wrote about Sagrantino di Montefalco I'd very much like to hear about what you guys are doing with the varriety in Oz. I'm in WA and I have some Sagrantino planted (only a couple of vines) and I'm about to pay some serious money to get the vine heat treated and tissue cultured to try and remove the viruses it seems to have in abundance.
I'm really interested in using this variety as a point of difference and would really like to hear about your and you associates' experience with the variety.
Marcello, I've replied to you privately about my experiences with sagrantino, including what is available through Chalmers, and what is planted in South Australia (d'Arrys and Coriole). What I didn't mention was that Sandro Mosele at Kooyong did the contract making for the 2004 Murray Darling Basin Collection sagrantino, and has a bit of experience working with the fruit.
Hi all There is another grower of Sagrantino in Vic, Swan Hill. Andrew Peace Wines has 10 acres and has bottled up the 05 vintage this year. Browns have some Sagrantino also
If you want sweet wine Campbell then you need to visit the Guadalupe Valley in Baja Mexico and drop into La Casa de Doña Lupe. They make a red called Honey Wine. Most of their wines seem to have some residual sugar but Honey Wine is something else. Barely drinkable, it is something that everyone should experience but only once.
I think that possibly the most exceptional, and unique of local sweet red wine hasn't rated a mention here yet. De Bortoli's Black Noble. Agree with PS, take a bo peep @ Sagrantino di Montefalco Passito it is sublime.
I look for sweet reds, made in the amarone style. The best I have found to date is 05 Koltz Pagan shiraz from McLaren Vale. Its sweet, rich and a bloody good drink.
Hi you all, maybe you can help me. I'm Italian and I work in a winery producing sagrantino. we would like to arrange a compared tasting sagrantino italiano vs sagrantino Australiano.the tasting is not to determinate wich is the best..is just the point of depart of a discussion wine-inspired about"beeing global drink local"(the title is not determinated yet).it will be very useful for me to know some australian producers of 100% sagrantino, can you help me? I only have bottles from "project wine"www.murraydarlingcollection.com but I know that there are more (and more!). maybe Mr Marcello of this forum is the same that in 2005 said on ZINQUISITION.blogspot.com that he would have produced "very soon" a bottle of "Sagrantino Di Antipodea".. but it seems that this wine doesn't exist.if you are the same marcello, can you please tell me about this wine? thank you for all the information you can give me.they will be really very helpful.of course I will keeo you updated with my research Roberta
Tarrango and Dolcetto? They are all sweet and they sell truckloads.
Which brings up an interesting point. I bet Brown Brother would sell more sweet table wines (both red and white) than dry table wines.
