Te Mata Estate Elston Chardonnay 2013

If many Australian wine writers are guilty of rating wines too high, then it’s some small consolation that our cousins across the ditch make us look pretty measured.

It’s a wine of some scale, though its flavours lean more towards the savoury than simply fruity. Chicken stock, cedar, roast nuts, nectarine and subdued pineapple the main players. Medium to full bodied, clean tight mineral acidity through savoury barrel work flavours and creaminess, white fleshed fruit and a pretty long finish. Shows a little warmth from alcohol, but no big problem. You have to like them of a very savoury worked style, but it’s a good wine.
