Wolf Blass Gold Label Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2005

November 19, 2008 · Posted in Adelaide Hills, Sparkling · Comment

I’m guessing that you can pick this up for a handy price and I know that it’s a very handy wine. This is a bargain in the sparkling ranks.

Chalkers Crossing Riesling 2008

November 10, 2008 · Posted in Hilltops, riesling · Comment

This is kept on lees for six months following fermentation. The wine itself shows again just how expert Celine Rousseau is at making white wine.

Tahbilk Riesling 2008

November 3, 2008 · Posted in Nagambie Lakes, riesling · 2 Comments

Admittedly Mitchelton’s Blackwood Park riesling gets the occasional spot of attention, but Nagambie Lakes region riesling is hardly heralded. This 2008 Tahbilk riesling is excellent though, and outstanding value.

Illuminati Riparosso 2006

November 2, 2008 · Posted in Italy, other reds · Comment

I’m pretty sure this modestly priced Montepulciano d’Abruzzo was once a stalwart of the Vintage Cellars catalogue but has now switched teams to play for Dan Murphy’s. You picked a fine vintage to leave me Lucille…

Herbert Pinot Noir 2006

October 26, 2008 · Posted in Mount Gambier, pinot noir · Comment

Mount Gambier is an emerging region that should not be discounted - its potential, from a quality perspective, is enormous. This Herbert pinot noir is an excellent example of that potential.

Rutherglen Estates Marsanne Viognier 2007

October 25, 2008 · Posted in Rutherglen, marsanne · 3 Comments

The mix is 70 percent marsanne, 30 percent viognier and it works very well here. This is an impressive wine in its style.

Wirra Wirra The Lost Watch Riesling 2008

October 22, 2008 · Posted in Adelaide Hills, riesling · 6 Comments

It might be just the observation of a rural dweller but it seems to me that Aussie riesling has become less obsessed with the Clare and Eden valleys in recent times as the wares of riesling from other areas become increasingly impressive. I’m thinking the Great Southern and Henty regions mainly though the King Valley and, in the case of Paradigm Hill, even the Mornington Peninsula produces the odd head-turner. Add to this roll call the Adelaide Hills … this wine is stunning.

Seppelt Drumborg Pinot Gris 2008

October 21, 2008 · Posted in Drumborg, pinot gris/grigio · 5 Comments

Is this the Gris formerly known as Coborra, or an altogether new wine? Either way it’s still one of Australia’s more convincing examples.
