Kay Brothers Block 6 Shiraz 2006

November 21, 2008 · Posted in McLaren Vale, shiraz et al · 4 Comments

Kay Brothers Block 6It’s a very specific style is the old Block 6. I’d have to think you’d pick it in a blind tasting…but then again I have (in)famously picked a Chateauneuf as Cabernet and Bass Philip Reserve Pinot as Pomeral…amongst other gems..but to my own credit I have been fabulously drunk on each occasion..

I tasted this and thought “Oooh er”, which roughly means this is a wine of great character and finesse.

Sandalford Estate Reserve Shiraz 2005

November 12, 2008 · Posted in shiraz et al · 1 Comment

Sandalford 2005The old idea that Margaret River isn’t a great area for shiraz sure is being challenged. This is another excellent wine. It was matured in French and American oak for 18 months.

Peter Lehmann The Futures Shiraz 2006

November 12, 2008 · Posted in Barossa Valley, shiraz et al · 9 Comments

Peter Lehmann FuturesMy flavour descriptors for the last three vintages of “The Futures” have all been remarkably similar and to differentiate them I’d say that 2004 was the plushest (and my favourite), 2005 the richest and 2006 the freshest.

Donny Goodmac Shiraz 2007

November 11, 2008 · Posted in Pyrenees, shiraz et al · 1 Comment

This is supposed to be the side-project of wine industry folks Cameron Mackenzie, Stuart Gregor and winemaker Kate Goodman. Problem is that it’s much better than that (Goodman is clearly the driving force). The 2006 was outstanding and while this hasn’t properly integrated yet, it will do, and then it will be quite something.

d’Arenberg Ironstone Pressings GSM 2006

November 8, 2008 · Posted in McLaren Vale, grenache et al · Comment

darenberg ironstoneThey’ve hit the jackpot with this one I think. It’s Grenache 70%, Shiraz 25%, Mourvedre 5% and a 100% convincing example of the blend.

Spinifex Esprit 2006

November 3, 2008 · Posted in Barossa Valley, grenache et al, mourvedre et al, shiraz et al · 5 Comments

I shared a bottle of this at a restaurant last night alongside a bowl of braised goat cooked agrodolce style (with vinegar and sugar). It went down a treat. This year’s blend is: mataro 34%, grenache 31%, shiraz 30% and cinsault 5%.
