DogRidge The Pup Shiraz 2007
Never be put off by an 89 point rating, especially when the price is right. It’s a bronze medal or a ‘good or very good’ rating in most word based scales and usually represents a tasty drop. I’d often rather drink this sort of wine than many higher scoring ones, if that makes any sort of sense.

DogRidge The Pup Cabernet Merlot 2007
When tasting wine, even though there’s a vast amount to get through, I still like to be thorough. I had this modestly priced wine a couple of points lower last night, but on re-tasting a day later it has come together very well. Obviously still a pup.

Optimiste Petit Verdot 2006
Yes, well we could all do with a good dose of optimism I think. And smelling Petit Verdot always makes me a little more cheerful.

Zuccardi Serie A Bonarda 2006
Having just reviewed a couple of Vintage Cellars-only imported red wines, here’s a Dan Murphy’s exclusive. This one is from Argentina. Bonarda is the grape variety.

Casa Santos Lima Quinta das Setencostas Alenquer DOC 2006
Mouthful of a name and a mouthful of wine. It’s from Portugal (and I could be wrong but I believe it’s matured in Portuguese oak). This is a Vintage Cellars import - and the value is very high.

Heartland Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Oh well now I keep singing the atmospheric bit from U2’s “Heartland”. It’s really quite annoying…

Angus The Bull Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
This is the sixth vintage of Hamish MacGowan’s ‘cabernet-to-drink-with-red-meat’ and it’s interesting to note that 75 percent of production is now exported. The grapes are sourced from a variety of South Australian and Victorian regions and despite myself, I’ve always been a fan of both the wine and the concept. The standard has been remarkably consistent each year too.
This is probably my favourite Angus the Bull cabernet yet. You need a subscription to The Wine Front to see this part of the post

The 2007 Yalumba Y Series Shiraz was pretty smart, this is even better.
