Shottesbrooke Merlot 2015

GW liked the 2014, CM not so much, a good yin n yang in commentary, just the way we like it on WineFront at times. I still hear people saying the like ‘a nice merlot’ too. When they say that, they don’t mean the stuff GW likes, by and large, they mean the soft, plummy stuff that comes from warm-hearted winemakers in warm regions wanting to set off the dopamine and endorphins come Friday night on the verandah with Billy Paul’s ‘Me and Mrs Jones’ playing softly.

A firmer, more sinewy merlot than expected, bustling with briar, black pepper, just-ripe black plums and a strong suggestion of dark chocolate. Dark chocolate and a twist of black currant to taste, a brisk cut of lemony acidity through the brooding fruit character. Just on medium weight, firm in texture, a touch shrill to finish. It’s got some good licks of flavour for merlot loves seeking some tannin and pucker, though. Meet you in the middle.
