Shaw + Smith Lenswood Chardonnay 2015

To be released in July. “I think for us we’ve been looking for parcels as they come in, and seeing blocks that are special, those that have innate characters that we like to see”, says winemaker Adam Wadewitz. From vineyards planted in 1999, set at 500 metres above sea level. “The grapes taste more coiled, if that’s a thing, they have a character that’s unique in that way”. The tendency is to use larger format oak here.

It’s in that floral, racy mode of chardonnay, flint-edged and sparkling with crisp acidity. The perfume is subdued to an extent, but you find wet slate, grapefruit pith, lemon blossom, sweet spice. Flavours tend to leaner chardonnay grape characters, citrus and pith, squeeze of lime, a sense of minerality. It’s tense and taut, linear and fine. It’s quite something, in its style.
