Port Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 2004

A new label design, a big heavy burgundy bottle and closed with Diam. These 2004 releases certainly look the business.
Fresh and fragrant with aromas of cherry, red berry, spice and a measure of vanilla oak. There is a light lemon smell too. On the palate a dry spicy wine with red fruit (leaning to the strawberry spectrum) and some smoky flavours. Slightly stalky grainy tannins. Warm but in balance. Dry finish. An attractive medium bodied varietal pinot that should improve with a bit more time in the bottle.
Tasted : Jan06Alcohol : 14%
Price : $32
Closure : Diam
Drink : 2006 - 2010

Gary,
Is the Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc the best two wines from this winery?
I’ve had the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the past but the Shiraz (Reserve 2000) and Sauv Blanc (2004 - JH 94 points) were better wines.
Are these guys situated a bit differently to the rest of the Mornington Peninsula wineries?
Cheers,
PS: What was the % Cabernet in this wine ?
I like the Pinot as much as the Shiraz. Have a sample of the 2004 PPE Shiraz (and 04 Kooyong Pinot) so that will go up shortly.
The 2000 Reserve Shiraz is doing well. Have had a few bottles in the last month or two. Not 94 points though for me.
I don’t know the area very well but they must be in a warm patch I would guess in order to ripen Shiraz. They are in located in Red Hill - same region as Paringa Estate.
I’d be an idiot if there was not about 84.5% grenache and mourvedere in this wine
94 Points was JH for the 2004 Sauv Blanc as well. Nice tight minerally wine just lacked sheer exuberance of a MArlborough example for higher points for me. 90 points
Loved the reserve shiraz when i had it, spices and a juicy palate from memory. Super wine 95 points in any case pretty good for $25.
Mmmmm wine - might be off and drink some now. Cheers,
I do like the shiraz from these guys, the 03 is very good as well. Was the 00 made by Lindsay Macall?
They do have a good location for shiraz at red hill, they are at the top the north west ridge (just past Darling park if you know the area) and get a lot of sun on the Sav Blac and Shiraz just in front of the cellar door.
I think the Pinot and Chards are on a westerly facing slope and don’t get as much sun as a result.
Thanks Shaggy, interesting. Westerly, plenty of sun but not as much as the north facing slope.
The Shiraz i tasted did not suffer from being underripe thats for sure.
Cheers,
