Plunkett Fowles Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

Plunkett Fowles We were discussing the merits of rating wines that are typical of their variety versus those that are just good wines. This is an example of the latter but it does present strongly regional minty flavours too.

Developed colour. Aromas of rich liqueur cherry and berry, spice, dark chocolate and peppermint, aniseed and plenty of oak. On the palate full bodied and packed with rich plum, cherry and berry, tobacco, dark chocolate mint flavours and spicy oak. Very ripe, bordering on stewy, but really very pleasant. Lots of ripe fine grained tannins and fairly low acidity. Excellent length of flavour. A wine for hedonists and peppermintists that packs the value in by the square inch. Looked good over a couple of days as well.

It’s interesting to read your note- I felt exactly the same way about trying to rate it. It is very ripe. You could go either way if trying to rate it according to a “purists” perspective on Cabernet. The second day sealed it for me- usually the stewed ones look really average on the second day and oxidise pretty quickly, but this looked even better and is still drinking really well on day three. It’s a mouthful, but delicious at the same time.

It certainly was a discussion-provoking wine. An extra point for that, I think.

Having tasted a dozen Plunkett Fowles wines at the cellar door, I expect these guys to raise the profile of the Strathbogie Ranges as a quality region – and fast. Glad to see James Halliday upgrading them in his 2008 guide. They’ve no laurels to rest on, here, so the wines are excellent.
