Petaluma Project Co. Riesling 2006

I tasted this alongside the recently reviewed 2007 Willi Schaefer Kabinett’s and I’d say it suffered in comparison, seemingly being neither fish nor flesh, sweet nor dry etc and certainly lacked the sugar and acid fuelled drive of the Germans. So I tasted it on its own the next day and it looked a little better. The fruit is from a patch of two German clones on the NW edge of the Hanlin Hill vineyard and the wine is made in a more oxidative style than is normal, and with a little residual sugar. It calls itself Spatlese in style on both the label and the accompanying bumf but does not seem that way to me; more an off dry Australian style I think.

The dynamic nature of Australian wine always amazes me. Three or four years ago people started muttering about the need for more ‘off-dry’ riesling from Australia. Suddenly, now, there are a stack of them.

But very few realise that without sufficient acidity, off dry Riesling is just sweet - Like the Leasingham offering tried recently which was just sugary Riesling.
