Noon Eclipse Grenache Shiraz 2006
When I was putting the ‘Why the French Hate Us’ book together one of my favourite parts was the section on Drew Noon of McLaren Vale’s Noon winery. I’ve just lifted this chapter of the book and placed it here. I’ve only met Drew once but ever since I’ve always looked forward to tasting and drinking his wine. I’ve had the following review in the drawer for a while - this should have been posted some time ago.

Difficult to forget the alcohol!! One for a cold night. Sounds heady and idiosyncratic.
What are the proportions of the blend? Do so many SA grenache blends cellar for 15 years? Campbell, I’m not generally a drinker of wines such as this (I’m more Northern rather than Southern Rhone as a rule), and haven’t your experience with aged examples obviously, I’m more just piqued by curiosity.
It is difficult to forget the high alcohol, you are right. And clearly these wines are not for everyone, nor (importantly) for every night. As someone reminded me the other day, I like this term ‘wine-mood matching’ more than I do the term ‘wine-food matching’, and these Noon wines are a perfect case in point.
Many nights I would not feel like drinking a Noon Eclipse. But when I do feel in the mood, they can be super enjoyable.
I did once know the proportions of the blend but I don’t have the details to hand. I suspect some viewers here might. The good, balanced examples will cellar for a long, long time.
I totally agree with ‘wine-mood matching’. If you are dying for a Barossan Shiraz, a Coonawarra Cabernet just won’t do. It’s also important to calibrate wine with mood when you road-test (or you’ll make decisions about purchasing that you’ll regret).
I think great wine goes with any food, and often the simpler the better. In fact, I treat just about all wines as aperitifs. Corn chips with my classified growth Bordeaux thank you, as long as they’re not too salty!! Thanks Campbell.
Campbell, is that price of $25 correct?
The $25 is the mailing list price for us lucky people who got on it 10 years ago.
I’ve been waiting for your ‘06 note for twelve months, must have been deep in the drawer
Almost time for the very small ‘07 release. Did you get a chance to taste the Reserve Shiraz and Cab Sauv as well?
I was interested that you gave the ‘06 a drinking range 2011-20 normally you suggest get stuck-in straight away to seven years. What is different with this vintage?
