Wine of the Week: 5 March, 2007

elizabeth semillon.jpgMount Pleasant Hunter Valley Elizabeth Semillon 2002 ($17) cork:
This will age well but it's bang-on for drinking right now - this is a perfect example of mature, frisky, delightful Hunter Valley semillon at its pretty-hearted best. It smells of honeysuckle and toast and tastes of lemons and talc and shells and lime, the finish of it gently hugging your tongue, as if it doesn't want to leave. This is the most enjoyable new-release Elizabeth I've tasted in years; light on its feet, delicate, tasty and serene. Damn it, I think I'll head out to dinner with it right now. Drink: 2007-2013. (NR because of the Wine Hunter book, but 93-94 points if I was rating it).

Three out of four of my last recent vintage Elizabeth purchases have been wrecked by corks. It's a wine I love, but I have stopped buying until the screwcap stock turns up.

ps - I feel your pain. And I know that Mount Pleasant feels your pain too. I only had one bottle of this and it opened up beautifully - let's just hope that 2002 was a lucky batch. The wine itself is a gem.

Yep...another 99 Lizzy opened last night. Stored in climate control since release. Wrecked. Yellow and oxidised. Down the sink. If you bat at 66% in a case you are doing well with this wine. The corks they use are garbage. I won't buy Elizabeth for the cellar anymore either. Maybe for drink on the night because you can take it back....

oh and while I am there the corks they use in Philip are equally disgraceful. A quality vintage like the 03 (or 00,99, 98 etc) deserves a few cents more. I'd rather the price go up. First case of 03 Philip has been a complete lucky dip (but then so have all other vintages).

One of the few reasons to shop at VC, they have Elizabeth in screwcap and usually at a good price, at least on release.

Campbell,
Have you reviewed the 03 lizzy? Has started filtering into bottle shops after what feels like an eternity on the 02.
