If I got 84 out of 100 in an exam I would be very happy(and would gladly take it as an average score in my education to be frank!). When reading this review it sounds like this wine "failed" yet still got 84points, this is where points don’t add up to me, pardon the pun. Everything seems to get pushed towards the ceiling. I concentrate on the content of the review but still it frustrates me.
Looks like you failed comprehension mind you….

Hi Andy,
The 100 point system that is used by most wine judges is as follows;
94-100 Exceptional in every way. The pinnacle of the style.
90-93 Excellent quality. A wine of style and character, with all components in balance.
87-89 Good quality with sound varietal character.
84-86 Ordinary and affording little drinking pleasure
80-83 Poor Quality, lacking balance or fruit integrity.
75-79 Faulty or distinctly lacking in some way.
Basically points start at 75 not zero.
Pity GW was not as helpful as is cynical.
Regards,
R Taber
Rod,
I’d probably disagree with you between 80 and 86, from my point of view anyway. 84-86 as I see it is still a decent wine, drinkable and often where a lot of solid sub $10 wines sit for me. Points are hard to get perfect though, I must say- "points creep" seems to dictate to the consumer that 90 points is the magic number for purchasing decisions. A lot of people don’t even bother reading a tasting note anyway so in a way we have created a rod for our own backs by adopting the 100 point system.
Cheers
Thanks guys for the constructive input (I will never send a note in a hurry, geez tough crowd). I am aware of the US based system and suppose my point was the 100 point system is pretty stupid for the reason that 75 is the starting point. Step back and think about that for a while. Just mark it out 25, it’s the same thing. With this limited approach, points creep is inevitable until it gets to the point where a wine that sounds very unnattractive gets 84points.
So either
a) ignore the points and enjoy the informative review
or
b) subtract 75 from the score
What difference does it make really? I think you understand pretty well what the score means within context and alongside other wines reviewed. The application varies from writer to writer. I know what a CM 84 means..and also a 94.
