Monchiero Barolo Rocche di Castiglione Riserva 2012

From the best parcel of the Rocche vineyard, and left in bottle for the additional two years to make it a ‘riserva’. My feeling is, many riservas lose something when the extra age is taken in barrel, freshness mainly, though this is not the case here. I’m pretty fond of the 2012 vintage, as I keep saying, and while I think they will age pretty well, they’re certainly drinking nicely as younger wines. Importer: Ethereal & Piedmont Fine Wines

Has a musky, rosy and smoky perfume, along with white pepper and star anise, plump cherry and raspberry fruit. Medium bodied, almost juicy and very supple, with dusty and peppery tannin, an orange peel and rose perfume, soft but balanced acidity, and a succulent finish of excellent length, slight tarriness and orange rind to close. What a bloody charmer. It’s a wine of many layers and easy complexity.
