Mike Press Shiraz 2014

mike press shiraz 2013Mike Press Shiraz. Capable of causing a stampede.

A layer of resiny oak sits on ripe, blackberried, velvety fruit. Spice notes work at the edges, though they’re up against it in the context of such fruit ripeness, and that coating of oak. That said, I looked at this wine over the course of a few hours, and the oak did settle back over that time. In some ways this is one of my favourite Mike Press shiraz releases, if clearly not the best. In other ways it feels a little concocted. I could easily have gone a point or two higher or lower; I found it hard to make up my mind on this one. It could just be too young.
