McWilliam’s Single Vineyard Hilltops Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

Cabernet Sauvignon from the “best block” on the Barwang vineyard, in the Hilltops region. It’s when you taste a wine like you realise what an undervalued resource the Barwang vineyard is. This is due for release in March 2017.

It’s a superb cabernet. Brimful of fruit, smooth of texture, complex-enough, ripped with tannin, persistent. You can ask for little more from a young red. It tastes of blackcurrant, bay leaves, graphite and sweet woodsmoke. It has a trademark cabernet dustiness. It builds impressive volume but then wraps chains of tannin around its all. Creamy vanilla and gum leaf characters both make appearances, if fleeting. This is a wine of overt quality.
