Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2008

Been dragging my feet a little getting some of  these Chardonnay reviews posted. This was #10 in a line-up of 33 wines, and I’m just guessing that not many people taste this wine blind (and I quite often don’t) – not that there’s anything wrong with not doing so – you can taste blind and still adjust the score later. I have not done so. The cards are as they fell on the day, no shuffling or stacking of the deck, an honest, although necessarily brief, tasting of an icon wine. And one of my favourites too.

May11: Fine quality cinnamon spice and vanilla oak, melon and mixed citrus with a touch of toasted nuts. It has balanced acidity, so no razor like focus here, but soft and composed – a wine of gentle charm and persuasion that has its way with you the more you return. Has a distinguished mineral and flinty finish and the barest slip of warmth from alcohol. Tasted blind, and recognising its individual quality, I pushed a glass back to taste later – but still never managed to spend enough time with it. Excellent. Needs time to evolve.

Feb12: A couple of bottles down and it’s looking like a terrific release. Less oak and alcohol, more finesse and line, though lacking none of the trademark Leeuwin power. There’s a core of grapefruit and fine acidity that I’ve not mentioned above. I’ve re-rated it upwards.
