La Violetta Up! Shiraz 2014

upThe Up! in this wine refers to the common suffix of -up in many of the place names in Western Australia. I didn’t pay attention to that until now. The -up means ‘place of’ and not ‘near water’ which is a common misconception. I thought it meant ‘near water’ for years until someone corrected me a while back. Anyways, from two vineyards, spends time in new and old French oak barrels.

Spice, cedar, toast, dark fruits, berries, currants, anise, briar. The bouquet does wonders. Says hello, I’m interesting, I have flavour. Transitions to a bright and flavoursome palate with lithe tannins, bold fruity strike of currant-berry flavours, and yet has a savoury note that gives complexity. Spice is a theme too – peppery, sweet, almost tactile in prickles. It just works. Nice length, great vitality, great flavour, great drinking.
