La Violetta Svogliato Shiraz 2013

Winemaker Andrew Hoadley has a way with words, his wines often accompanied by a handwritten note, or an email with some interesting detail. Here’s some of the colour on this wine:

Re the name: I’ve been using the “Svogliato” codename for this vineyard for some years now. It means lazy in Italian – I think of the lazy winemaker who gets fruit from a great vineyard in a great year, and really has nothing much to do.. it’s all there like a plate of juicy figs.

Also, my mind wanders back to a listless previous life, sharing an abandoned army barracks in Gibraltar with the seagulls, passing the days reading the Odyssey to myself out loud, the nights listening to the crashing waves.. A little laziness goes a long way.

It’s shiraz from south of Mount Barker, a vineyard Hoadley likes and spends some time in. A little whole bunch. A short spell in new barriques. A shift to large format oak to do its time.
