Kooyong MassaleI have had very good experiences with the last few vintages of Massale by Kooyong. This is a good wine but it is a little different from previous releases. It shows the hot early vintage and reminds me a bit of some of the better 2003 red Burgundies.

A vivid clear red colour with aromas of cherry/raspberry, mineral, soil and subtle vanilla oak with a suggestion of licorice richness. No mistaking this for anything other than pinot. On the palate light to medium bodied with clear fresh cherry and raspberry, spice and mineral flavours. Very bright pippy acidity and light slightly sappy grainy tannins. Dry minerally finish. At this stage this is all about structure rather than fruit. It’s one for later rather than now.

Amazing set of notes for a wine that I know so well. I have seen this in masked tastings three times over the past few months. The first time it was like the Grosset Adelaide Hills, bright marachino cherry fruit bomb. I preferred this I might add. The second time with structure and bitterness and low fruit. The most recent tasting was fruit bomb with structure and looking very good. I asked the maker and he suspected that it was a transport/handling. I was quite rude and dismayed that it looked so dull in the middle tasting you see. My conclusion was that the bright fruit normally seen, clean character and “Pinosity” make it exceptional value. remember I like this kind of clean, bright fruited Pinot!

I should taste more MP wines..I have the 05 Estate Pinot and Chardonnay and 06 Clonale to come. This bottle was maybe more like the middle one but not dull. I poured off a glass into a half bottle I had at work before giving the wine away last night. Bugger had not budged but gained structure and lost the chubby young fruit. Looked excellent.

Tell us about the 2006 MP vintage Uncle David?

It was very warm and those in the lower parts picked really early. The weather went cool, as it always does and the higher parts had longer hang time. My observations are that the flavours are very good but wrt PN there is some variation across the region wrt the clones eg my 115 was very lightweight and the MV6 big compared to a friend in lower parts where it was the other way round. Those with multiple clones such as Kooyong will get great balance. If anyone had 100% Dijon clones such as 115 on the higher parts they would be upset. To put all this into a time frame, I seem to recall Kooyong had picked all their PN a week before those “on the hill” began to pick, 4 to 6 weeks behind yet 10km apart as the crow flies.
