Jauma Ralph’s Dry Grown Grenache 2015

Winemaker James Erskine is righteous. He’s locked down expert viticulturist Fiona Wood as his grower, she’s farming everything organically, he’s making brilliant, vibrant wines without additions, without sulphur, he’s cautious, thoughtful, real with his winemaking. He’s moving at pace, but he’s gaining traction. His new releases are high quality wines in anyone’s books. This is dry grown grenache from McLaren Vale. It’s gentle wine. It’s transparent. It’s delicious.

It’s delicious. Truly. It sits in a big glass with pale colour but ribald scents of rose petal, cola, pot pourri, dark plum, herbs. Wafty and pretty. The palate is fine, delicate, tightly wound but also has a juiciness; it’s yin and yang of fruit, tannin and acidity. There’s chompy amaro-like sour sweetness, brisk dark fruit and licks of herbs, leather and earth in light supply. You feel supple berry goodness bustling then tobacco-like savouriness coupled to fine, dusty tannins to close. Unadorned, delicious, elegant, fine grenache.
