Houghton C.W.Ferguson Cabernet Malbec 2007

This is a new wine from Houghton (or it may be a re-badged Crofters) who are making (or releasing to be technically correct) some of the best, if not the best, Cabernet based wines in Australia at the moment. The majority of fruit for this wine (Cabernet Sauvignon 46%, Malbec 25%) was sourced from the Justin Vineyard in the Frankland River with the remaining Cabernet (30%) being sourced from the Langton Vineyard in Mt Barker.

Opened up a little light and gum leafy, but given considerable air time put on plenty of weight. It’s black fruited with a raspberry beret and has a black olive and tobacco savouriness combined with cedar and coffee oak – all very nicely done.  Firm and medium bodied with liberal fine grained tannins and a fine sense of structural integrity too – you get the impression that this is rock solid and built to last. It’s rich enough, with ample fruit sweetness, but has a certain ascetic savouriness and restraint that makes it so nobly Cabernet. Impressive debut.
