Felton Road Block 3 Pinot Noir 2011

From the famed single block. Biodynamic viticulture and some serious attention to detail. It’s one of those impossibly hard to find wines in Retail Land, generally allocated to B & D-like strictness. Usually very impressive drinking when young, it’s a wine that ages seriously well too. Sound the trumpets, dangle the angels, cue the smoke machine.

Immediately seductive on approach with very fresh but simple fruit aromas of red berry/cherry and a touch of briary, forest floor; one would say delicate. It’s sweet and gently spicy, flits across the palate yet shows generosity in length and flavour without being overbearing. An almost refreshing feel to close, with great intensity throughout and given just a slender sheen of sandalwoody oak. In essence it’s a light-to-medium-bodied dancing feel, yes, there is oomph, but subdued, a subterranean power that underlies the needle-point detail of fruit, spice and graphite-minerality – there’s a lacy innocence here. So impressive.
