Skin-contact. Orange. Amber.

Whatever you choose to call white wines that spend extended time fermenting and maturing on their skins, they’re now an undisputed, indispensable dimension of the natural wine world. And while they’ve been produced in the Caucasus since just about time immemorial, the Italian region of Friuli has become today’s hotbed and point of reference for this particular style of winemaking.

In many ways, it’s thanks to producers like Radikon and Gravner that this region and its wines are admired, enjoyed and even imitated worldwide. But there are a host of other producers on the Slovenian border, lesser known but no less considered in their approach that deserve recognition. Dario Princic is one of them.

He has worked his family vineyards from an early age, and has an innate understanding of the unique soils and steep slopes he calls home. He has farmed without chemicals since 1988, using organic and biodynamic principles, with all the work done by hand. Fermentation comes courtesy of native yeasts with no temperature controls. The wines are unfined, unfiltered and have only minimal amounts of sulphur added.

Join wine journalist, shop owner and unabashed Friuli fanboy Mike Bennie and co-host/Rootstock co-founder/importer extraordinaire Giorgio de Maria for a rare chance to have an in-depth look at these introspective, intricate, precise, persistent and rather extraordinary wines. The tasting will include current releases of the Bianco, Jakot, Pinot Grigio, Ribolla Gialla, Trebez, Favola, with back vintages woven in. Afterwards, wander down the stairs and hang around for one of our famous BBQs. Tickets here.
