Eastern Peake Intrinsic Pinot Noir 2015

I don’t mean to sound rude, but if you’re a fine wine lover, interested in the currency of Australian wine culture, and haven’t caught the work of Owen Latta (and family) from Eastern Peake and Latta Wines, you’re missing out. A lovingly tended, mature site gives birth to Eastern Peake, the Latta family wines. Owen’s been working here since school days, having stepped in for his dad. The viticulture keeps improving, the wines tweaked just a touch each year to eke out best result. It would put a tear in Trevor Mast’s eyes, I reckon, looking back at what he first help establish here as a sourcer of their grapes and mentor to the Lattas. Lots to like.

Class pinot in the sappy, succulent, light-on-its-feet style. Cherry pip, cherry juice, pomegranate and cranberry to sniff on. Barely there seasoning of spice, clove, but the main thing is this unashamedly unadorned purity of red fruits. Tannins are a feathery grip, acidity bright, the wine impossibly long and ever so gently palate staining. Such seduction. Undeniably beautiful wine. And such drinkability. That rugged Ballarat gives life to this delicacy is such a curiosity; and rewarding as such. Line up, all you pinot lovers.
