Wynns Coonawarra Estate Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Mattinson: Wynns Black Label Cabernet is made from vines with an average age of 32 years – a remarkable statistic I reckon, given the size of production. The 2007 is the 52nd vintage release, and (again, amazingly) it’s from the lowest yielding vintage in the label’s history. The tragedy was frost. The few grapes they pulled together were fermented and then matured in a mix of American and French oak for 15 months – most of this oak was used oak, though of the oak used more of the French oak was new, than the American. Confusing but hopefully you get the picture.

The result is a beautifully balanced wine. The tradition of quality has been continued ably. It’s curranty, minty, fresh and pure. It’s medium weight at best, but it ushers through the finish nicely, and with some persistence. I like the way it feels in the mouth, the taste of it, and the impression it leaves – without ever being bowled over. It’s by no means an essential wine, but at the right price it’s still excellent buying and, more importantly, drinking.

Walsh: OK. Sorry about this but we’re in agreement yet again. And it’s as disturbing for me as it might be disappointing for you. We’ll choose more wisely next time, although you’d have to agree that the Black Label is an important wine: possibly the most important cellaring wine in Australia? Anyway, there’s blackcurrant, boysenberry sauce, some choc-mint and bit of new leather/black olive. Lick of vanilla oak too. Good smelling wine. It’s intense too, with the concentration I’m seeing in these 2007 Coonawarras and equally strong acidity. Almost essencey it feels. The tannins are strong too – grainy and firm and I like the finish but have minor reservations about the chicory-like flavour that it carries. A very good Black Label. I was toying with the idea of rating it 93 points, but I don’t want to rock the boat…or spoil the serenity.
