Hoddles Creek Estate Chardonnay 2009

MATTINSON: No point in messing around here. This is a beautiful chardonnay. Tart but creamy, funky but pure, powerful and yet elegant. It’s all things to all folks, and yet most of all it’s just A-grade quality.  Buy it now, give it another year’s rest, then pop one or two bottles a year over the next half dozen, and you’d be laughing. Drink: 2011-2017. 94 points.

WALSH: I like it, but not as much as the 2008. First thing that strikes me is how much youthful tropical fruit it shows – honeydew melon, pineapple etc. There’s also grapefruit and white peach, creamy almond meal and a touch of smoke. It’s has a light but sure touch on the palate with clean fine acidity and excellent length. Precision and grace. Structurally it has the goods, amazing given the price, but is in desperate need of a couple of years cellaring to shake off the slightly candied tropical notes. Good now, great later. Drink 2012-2018. 92+ points.
