Barwang Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Mattinson: I always want to like Barwang cabernet and usually do, though rarely quite as much as I’d like to. I’ve wanted to like it ever since I visited the Barwang vineyard up near Young in the Hilltops region of New South Wales and realised what a glorious position it holds. Reminds me a bit of Beechworth – tough country but grand country, hot in the summer but freezing in the winter, and with good cool summer nights too. My one and only visit was in summer and I got sunburnt as a freezing gale blew, proving all climatic points at once.

This 2006 release though is one helluva classy cabernet. It’s upper echelon in all respects – except the price. It has power, structure, pure drinkability and the potential to be aged for a decent amount of time. It tastes of polished blackcurrant with dusty edges and I don’t expect to see a cellar-worthy red as good as this, discounted to the prices this can be found at, in a hurry. Gold medal standard for me. 94 points

Walsh: I like Barwang too and still have some ’97 Cabernet floating about in the cellar. I’ve always thought the name sounded descriptive of a type of person you might find in a bar – sort of like a Bar Fly, only one that’s physically more demonstrative of their affections.. Campbell called this “A Doorbuster” and I like that term; I take it to mean a wine where price and quality collide. Bang.

A complex range of smells – boot polish, gum leaves, truffle, black fruit and a touch of chocolate – the fruit aromas coming up with a good decant – the others bedding themselves back down into the wine. It’s medium to full bodied with lovely vibrant fruit of a blackcurranty persuasion and combines good firm Cabernet tannin with excellent length of flavour. Serious wine and remarkable value. Is that the sound of hinges creaking I can hear in the distance?  93 points (and I think it will most likely cellar well past 2016)
