Xanadu Dragon Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

The Xanadu wines took a step up last vintage so I was keen to taste this.I suspect that the new ownership - it’s now part of the Rathbone group - has been very good for wine quality here.

If you want to see what the Margaret River 2007 red vintage is like this would make for an excellent start - at a pretty decent price.

Rosabrook Shiraz 2005

I don’t know much about Rosabrook, not even the price of the wine, but a bit of googling reveals that it might be $15 by the dozen..and then again it might be more.

Moss Wood Semillon 2008

Tuesday, Nov 18 2008 · Posted in Margaret River, semillon et al · 2 Comments

By Gary Walsh

Today, in a rare moment of synchronicity, I had a couple of spare minutes and a copy of the Good Living supplement from the Sydney Morning Herald to hand, in which the inestimable H.Hooke gives us a brief review of a new book - Andrew Jefford’s Wine Course. Apparently A.Jefford is of the opinion that in Margaret River “Semillon works better as a varietal wine than anywhere else in the country”. “Well”, as one of my dear old friends used to say, “there you bloody go”.

Brookland Valley Merlot 2004

Monday, Nov 17 2008 · Posted in Margaret River, merlot et al · 1 Comment

Grown at the southern end of Margaret River in gravelly soils. It has a cupful of cabernet in it too. This has picked up a couple of trophies on the wine show circuit - so it must be good.

Moss Wood Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006

I guess most of us shake our heads at the price of Moss Wood Pinot Noir - but it must sell, or else they wouldn’t keep making it and releasing it at this price.

Moss Wood Amy’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

Friday, Nov 7 2008 · Posted in Margaret River, cabernet et al · 6 Comments

By Campbell Mattinson

Moss Wood’s Amy’s Cabernet is the wine once known as Glenmore - it changed when the Glenmore cabernet vineyard became a brand in its own right. It is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and malbec.

Interestingly enough - both Gary Walsh and I have tasted this wine in our separate locations, from separate bottles. His views are wildly different from mine - so much so that I reckon that his bottle was faulty. The wine is sealed with a screwcap. Bottle variation is less likely under screwcap, but it its still possible - a fact that should always be acknowledged. In any case, GW saw a balsamic character to the wine which is not present in my bottle.

Cullen Diana Madeline 2006

Monday, Nov 3 2008 · Posted in Margaret River, cabernet et al · 14 Comments

By Gary Walsh

Cullen DMIt has been remiss of me not to have got round to reviewing this wine until now. I tasted it back in June and was prompted by a subscriber who was seeking an opinion. I’m not entirely sure of the value offered this vintage, but if you subscribe to the “light and shade” theory of wine, then this is a good example of “shade”, and for a cold and generally horrid red vintage, it’s an excellent result.

Were Estate Semillon Sauvignon Blanc 2008

Were Estate is in the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margeret River. Th wines show a lot of promise, but this semillon sauvignon isn’t one of its highs.
