Wyndham Estate George Wyndham Shiraz Tempranillo 2007

Thursday, Mar 11 2010 · Posted in Adelaide Hills, Barossa Valley, shiraz et al, tempranillo et al · 2 Comments

By Campbell Mattinson

This was originally destined for ‘cellar door only’ but it’s now been released more widely, via Woolworths stores - I’m told.

The label also uses the words ‘Founder’s Reserve’.

Blackbilly Tempranillo 2008

The winemakers for this Blackbilly Tempranillo are listed as Warren Randall and Nick Haselgrove. I’d like the wine to have a touch more oomph, but the style of it is good.

You don’t see a lot of grenache grown in Victoria - a fact that has long-since intrigued me.

Mr Riggs Yacca Paddock Tempranillo 2008

The 2007 version of this Yacca Paddock Tempranillo just won a major gong at a Hong Kong wine event. I especially enjoy the word ‘paddock’ being paraded internationally.

I wonder if drinking too much of this wine might result in a Balbas nose? Importer: Ce Soir.

My Favourite Spanish Red 2007

Presumptions name I suppose, but importer Marcus Gniel is not a man to be gainsaid. He has his photo on the back of his business card you know, which is something that has had a lasting effect on me. I’m thinking of doing the same, being devilishly handsome too, but Mattinson has yet to approve the expense..

Phew. That’s a ridiculously long name. Anyway, I’m finding more and more that Canberra reds taste as much like Canberra reds as they do of their particular grape variety. And that’s no bad thing.

Penfolds Cellar Reserve Tempranillo 2007

Monday, Nov 9 2009 · Posted in McLaren Vale, tempranillo et al · 5 Comments

By Gary Walsh

Peter Gago writes some excellent and very quirky tasting notes to accompany his wines. I try not to read too many of the accompanying notes sent by wineries, but Gago’s are always worth a look. He describes this wine as having ‘a nectar (peach) and pan-juices/demi-glace amalgam hold centre-stage, flanked by cold meats and subtle oak.’ OutrĂ© but so accurate..apart from the bit about subtle oak..
