Wine Hunter Book Cover.jpgWINE HUNTER, by Campbell Mattinson

He is known in some circles as Australia’s greatest ever winemaker. In others, more simply, as its most remarkable. Between the early 1920s and the late 1950s he made a swag of great wines, many of which came to be known as the best ever made in Australia. Many of them were magnificent drinks at 50 and 60 years od age. That they were made in the humblest of circumstances, in the hardest of times – and at great personal cost – makes that man’s story all the more rivetting. That man is Maurice O’Shea. He gave it all so that the world could have something beautiful to drink.
The Wine Hunter is Maurice O’Shea’s story.
Wine Hunter is published in Australia by Hachette Australia.

"One of the most remarkable wine books to come my way. If this book does not add yet more awards, there is no justice. It will capture anyone who reads it: this is not a wine geek book but an epic."
JAMES HALLIDAY

"Campbell Mattinson is arguably Australia's most literate, and certainly most literary, wine writer. I admire his monograph on the Hunter Valley pioneer Maurice O'Shea The Wine Hunter, immensely.”
JANCIS ROBINSON

"In my opinion, this is the best book on wine to be published in Australia for many, many years."
MAX ALLEN, THE AUSTRALIAN

"Wine Hunter is a breakthrough wine book: an astonishing, cerebral, emotional entanglement of fact and dramatisation, of tender detail and beautiful, expressive words. Has there ever been a wine book written quite this way? It's the story of our greatest winemaker, Maurice O'Shea, a man blessed with an astonishing gift who changed the face of early Australian winemaking at his vineyard.”
JENI PORT, THE AGE

Campbell - well done, if the book lives up to the reviews and reflects your get-under-the-skin-and-into-the-soul approach to wine writing, it will be superb. Wish I was going to the Prince tasting (Canberra is isolated in more ways than one). I cant wait for it to come out. cheers Alistair

Thanks Alistair. What the book tries to do is let us walk in the skin of Maurice O'Shea in the 1920s and 30s for a while - when no one, except for him, was making great table wine in Australia.

Is this book offer a different book than the one you had on offer previously? (My order would have been mailed out around the end of July.) If so then I'm definitely in.

Pity I have to send these books to relatives and have them hold them for me. Any chance of getting future books on Amazon?

Yes, this is the full-length, commercial release.
As to whether or not it will ever appear on Amazon - I'm working on it.

cheers Mike,

Excellent. I'll be putting in an order in the next day or so.

If I want to buy an extra one or two for Xmas presents (and who wouldn't) can I use the same form? Won't confuse you too much will it to see the same credit card for multiple addresses?

Ok, I tried but it was no use. I wanted to read The Wine Hunter in a few weeks when I was going to be on holidays. However after picking up by copy on Friday I started to read a few pages to get an idea what the book would be like.
What a silly thing to do. :-)
By Saturday lunchtime I had finished one of the best wine related books I have read.
Like O'Shea, you have experimented, played around and come up with an absolute winner.
Well done

Thanks Anthony, you're a champ. It's very pleasing to hear when people have enjoyed the book - it's what O'Shea deserves.

A little dated but I just finished this, grabbed a copy after reading Why The French Hate Us. Cracking read, loved the energy - you could feel the excitement through the pages.
A great book for the Aussie wine industy to look upon and reflect positively.
Keep up the great work!
