A while before Basket Range became synonymous with a counter culture wine movement of great noise, a shift in thinking, some wild wines (some great wines!) and a heady dose of carnivale, there was Basket Range Wine from Phillip and Mary Broderick. Having shifted ‘up the hill’ in the late 1970s, comes another culture all on its own, but woven into the story of that quirky, lovely parish of the Adelaide Hills. Someone asked me the other day ‘what are your best merlots from Australia?’, to which I said, a couple of things, but amongst it, Basket Range Wine’s.
Fleshy merlot of suppleness and succulence, dark plummy fruit flavours, suggestions of black olive, mushroom, kirsch and green herbs. Spicy, herbal, clove-like wood and black forest berry scents. Lots of perfume and depth in flavour, pillowy, juicy texture with enough powdery tug of tannin to bring the wine form and shape, despite its pleasing spread through the mouth. Medium weight but with a bigger heart, this is very nice drinking.
