Altior-Bottle-shot

Principia Altior Pinot Noir 2016

Interestingly, I prefer the ‘standard’ Pinot Noir to this, as a drink, though the quality is similar.

Principia Pinot Noir 2016

It’s been a few years since I’ve tried anything from this producer, but there’s three in the wings here now. Tasted sixteen wines from 2016 (Australia) and 2015 (ROW) last night at the Stonier International Pinot thingy, which was interesting. This wasn’t included, but feel I’ve kind of got my eye in, a little. I’m not the Pinot Noir specialist here, but think I can do a fair job when I apply myself.

mirafioreriseva-167x300

Mirafiore Barolo Riserva 2010

It’ll be a bit of fun, in years to come, working out which was the ‘better’ vintage: 2010 or 2013. Of course, some wines will be superior in one year, to the other, but as an overall thing, kind of interesting. Importer: Fourth Wave Wine

Paiagallo, at least for me, is an MGA that doesn’t get the acclaim it perhaps should. Importer: Fourth Wave Wine

Prince Albert Pinot Noir 2014

Vineyard planted in 1975, organic since 1988. These wines are of a particular style, and distinctive in that sense, which is invariably a good thing.

PV_CABERNET_1024x1024

Pyren Vineyard Cabernet 2016

Cabernet in a wax sealed Burgundy bottle (perhaps suggesting a little Loire styling?). Seems to be a winery that’s innovating or re-inventing itself. Regardless, impressed with their work of late.

Brown Brothers Patricia Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

There are so many areas in the sphere of wine where CM and MB exceed me; writing ability, tasting prowess, and just simply rolling up the sleeves and getting on with it. There’s one thing, however, where I’m rarely surpassed. And that’s talking about myself. Anyway, when we are not tasting blind at MBTF, Mike accuses me of ‘cherry picking’ wines for review. Guilty as charged. CM gently chastises me for doing too many imports. Guilty again. Well, I’m going to start getting down to it ’round about now, and review whatever comes my way.

Mount Pleasant Lovedale 1946 Vines Semillon 2017

Winemaker Adrian Sparks is a big fan of KFC, and I am too. I’d pair this with a fresh Zinger Burger, whereas a three piece pack is better with Batard-Montrachet. Often greatness is right in front of your nose, without ever realizing it.

rozeta

Maxime Magnon Corbières Rouge Rozeta 2017

Apparently a “field blend with mostly Carignan; also Grenache, Syrah, Grenache Gris, Macabeo, Terret” from old vines grown up high. The 2014 was excellent; my last encounter with this particular wine. I don’t drink a lot of red wine during the week, and when I do, I’m very fussy. This wine had me pouring a healthy sized glass in no time.  Importer: Andrew Guard.
