mewstone sauvignon blanc

Mewstone D’Entrecasteaux Channel Sauvignon Blanc 2017

The 2016 release had me somewhat non-plussed; no such problem with this 2017. As a side note, I wouldn’t mind forming the word “Entrecasteaux” in Scrabble. Or Words With Friends.

Schmolzer Brown Brunnen pinot noir

Vignerons Schmölzer & Brown Brunnen Pinot Noir 2016

This is the third release of a pinot noir from this vineyard by the Schmolzer & Brown team. “This is the first year where I reckon we timed shoot thinking correctly: really late, as in just before flowering in early December, so no laterals grew afterwards to shade the fruit zone later on. It’s an unirrigated but high vigour site as the vines are on their own roots and these are now down in the shale aquifer. Growth is always really profuse until Christmas when the water table starts to drop. We hand harvest and triage in the vineyard to exclude peppermint gum leaves, then destem and roughly whole berry ferment.” Six barrels were made; only one of those barrels was new.

Yalumba The Signature (bottle shot)

Yalumba The Signature Cabernet Shiraz 2014

Cabernet Sauvignon and shiraz, matured for 21 months in French, Hungarian and American oak, 32% new (though none of the American oak was new). You’d imagine, given Yalumba’s history and facilities, that all the oak was Australian coopered.
