clonakilla hilltops shiraz

Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz 2016

Over time it has established a reputation as one of the most reliable go-to wines on the Australian wine landscape. I’ve become less of a fan of Hilltops shiraz over the years – with exceptions of course – but this wine is almost always a hit.

st andrews cabernet sauvignon

St Andrews Cabernet Sauvignon 2016

This is what the press release said: “A $6 Cabernet Sauvignon sold exclusively by Liquorland, First Choice and Vintage Cellars has won top honours at the prestigious Melbourne International Wine Competition, beating a field of Australian and international competitors to take home a treasured ‘double gold’ medal.”

Despite all that, personally, I was sceptical pre-tasting.

This is what we say:

stockmans ridge handcrafted pinot noir

Stockman’s Ridge Handcrafted Pinot Noir 2015

The Handcrafted range is described as the winemaker’s “guilty pleasure”, a chance to experiment. I tried this alongside Stockman’s Ridge Rider Pinot Noir of the same vintage and they are remarkably different wines. Which just goes to show how much influence the winemaker has. This was wild fermented, hot.

terre a terre rose

Terre à Terre Rosé 2016

Interesting one. A still, table rose but it’s made with both pinot noir and chardonnay. Indeed it was picked for sparkling; this is made from the pressings. It was fermented in three-year-old oak and then given a short stint (two months) in oak before going into tank and then bottle. Only 225 dozen produced.

The Patritti family bought a property at Lot 3 Elliots Road in Blewitt Springs in 1960. By 1969 they’d planted 25 acres of shiraz on their land. This wine was matured in all-French, all-new puncheons.

mitchell harris shiraz

Mitchell Harris Shiraz 2014

I suspect that this has sold out and that vintages have moved on for this wine but for the sake of database integrity, among other things, here is a review of this leading Moonambel shiraz. This sees 25% whole bunches and includes 2% Viognier.

blue pyrenees estate cabernet sauvignon

Blue Pyrenees Cabernet Sauvignon 2014

The reds coming out of Blue Pyrenees Estate are pretty much uniformly in very good form. They’ve never really been able to get the look of the labels right, imho, despite many revisions, but more importantly the wine inside the bottle is worth jumping at.

Blue Pyrenees Section One Shiraz 2014

New “reserve” range for Blue Pyrenees Estate. This shiraz is from vines planted in the late 1960s – the oldest vines on the property. It was co-fermented with a tiny (1%) amount of Viognier. It was matured, curiously enough, in both French and American oak.
