Scorpo Pinot Noir 2006

Wednesday, Jul 30 2008 · Posted in Mornington, pinot noir · 8 Comments

By Gary Walsh

ScorpoScorpo always puts me in mind of Al Pacino..but I’m obviously confusing it with Serpico.

This is a lovely wine of refinement and grace offering plump cherries, red fruits, spice, a foresty fragrance with some wood and vanilla top notes. It’s medium bodied and fresh - lithe but well knit with gentle ultra-fine tannins and a pleasing minerality running through subtle, slightly sour edged and sappy, red fruits. The finish is dry and lengthy with the overall impression of red Burgundy being a role model.

Balnaves The Blend 2006

Tuesday, Jul 29 2008 · Posted in cabernet et al · 5 Comments

By Gary Walsh

Balnaves The BlendI think this is a much better wine than the more expensive Cabernet Merlot. It’s something of a bargain too.

It smells of blackberry and raspberry, vanilla custard, a bit of dark chocolate, play-doh, licorice and gum leaf. On the palate medium to full bodied with a delightful mix of berries, cedar and chocolate. Distinctly bright acidity, powdery tannins and an abundance of flavour presented with freshness and finesse complete the package. Lovely wine and a snip at the price.

Scorpo Pinot Gris 2007

Tuesday, Jul 29 2008 · Posted in Mornington, pinot gris/grigio · 16 Comments

ScorpoIf I was a master of understatement (which I’m not) then I’d tell you I don’t really like Pinot Gris very much at all. Most local examples are ghastly, but then I’ve had Scorpo before and think they do a good line in PG, so I was up for a bit of this..

Smells good - apples, pear and peaches, a musky fragrance, white flowers and baby oil. On the palate fresh and lively with good clean acid, a pleasing minerality and excellent length of flavour. It’s refreshing and dry, neither phenolic or oily, and drinks beautifully from start to finish. I’d say it’s a local benchmark. Excellent wine.

Brokenwood McLaren Vale Sangiovese 2006

Tuesday, Jul 29 2008 · Posted in McLaren Vale, sangiovese et al · 2 Comments

Brokenwood Wade BlockQuick note on this one. Today I’m feeling economical.

Sour cherry and red berry, almond and vanilla essence and a minor leathery character. In the mouth medium bodied and really quite tasty with choc-almond, berries and a touch of spice. A bit warm and slightly dilute, seemingly a little wobbly, but with a good cherry and spice finish. Nice wine, good drinking, fully priced.
